There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which casino gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat casino, features 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel complex that contains many conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
