There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are based in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge casino, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that features numerous conveniences aside from the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
